Can You Really Scrap a Car Without a V5C?

Yes. The V5C logbook is the preferred document but it is not a legal barrier to scrapping your car. Licensed scrap dealers are permitted to buy vehicles without a V5C as long as the seller can prove ownership and identity.

The key things you need without a logbook are valid photo ID and confirmation that you own the vehicle. If you have any supporting documents such as a purchase receipt, insurance certificate or old MOT certificate, these help strengthen your ownership evidence, but they are not always required.

We handle the DVLA notification ourselves as part of the collection. You do not need to contact the DVLA separately once we have collected the vehicle and issued the Certificate of Destruction.

What Each Document Means

Required

Photo ID

A valid driving licence or passport confirming your identity. This is required by law for all scrap car transactions.

Preferred

V5C Logbook

The vehicle registration certificate issued by the DVLA. Preferred but not essential if you can prove ownership another way.

Helpful

Insurance Certificate

A recent insurance certificate in your name provides strong supporting evidence that you are the owner of the vehicle.

Helpful

Purchase Receipt

If you bought the car privately and have the original receipt or transfer document, this supports your ownership claim.

Issued on Day

Certificate of Destruction

We issue this on collection. It legally removes the vehicle from your name and confirms it has been sent for recycling.

Issued on Day

DVLA Notification

We submit notification to the DVLA on collection day. Your road tax is automatically cancelled and any remaining VED refunded.

Can I scrap my car without the V5C logbook?

Yes. While the V5C is preferred, it is not legally required to scrap a car. You need valid photo ID and confirmation of ownership. We guide you through the process and handle the DVLA notification on your behalf.

Without a V5C you will need valid photo ID such as a driving licence or passport, and ideally supporting documents such as an insurance certificate, purchase receipt or old MOT certificate. Not all of these are required but they help confirm you are the legal owner.

We handle this for you as part of the collection. The DVLA can also be notified online at gov.uk using your vehicle registration number even without the physical document. We issue a Certificate of Destruction which is the key document.

No. The lack of a V5C does not reduce the scrap value of your car. The price is based on your vehicle's weight and the current scrap metal rate, not on the paperwork.

In most cases yes. Inherited vehicles can be scrapped but you may need to provide evidence of inheritance such as a grant of probate or a letter from the estate. Give us a call and we will advise on your specific situation.
